Squid Games Season 2 // Starts With A Bang

I have to be honest. I am late to the squid games party. I heard all the hype when season 1 came out but just never gave it a fair shot. I always felt like I had already seen the show without ever watching an episode. I felt like I’ve seen this plot and idea. I felt like I knew exactly how the show was going to feel and look and even how it was going to wwrap up. I never assumed it to be bad but not exciting enough to tune in.
My wife is the one who instigated me into watching squid game. She didn’t even do it intentionally. She was watching season 2 and I was working on my tablet. I just couldn’t help but keep looking up at the sccreen. It grabbed my attention to the point where I put down the tablet and binged the whole season with her. Here are my main takeaways from the show:
- It is a charachter driven show
I was so suprised with how incredible the charachters were. Normally, in a show like this, you aren’t asked to enjoy the personality of the charachters. It’s too dark of a story and it’s such a juicy plot so why would it need to focus on charachter development? Yet, this is exactly the focus of the show. Every charachter has incredible moments. Moments of fear and moments of courage. The conversations between the charachters say so much with so few dialog. Hwang Dong-hyuk is the writer and creator of the show and he does such an amazing job at scripting dialog that truly matters. Every word has significance. The charachters have so much personality and were a huge reason I fell in love with this show.
2. The show keeps it stupid simple
I often find it shows like this one, they become incredibly complex. They start to spend a large portion of the screen time to try and map out these ideas that are very high concept. Unfortunately, This can often make the show intriguing but not necessarily fun to watch. Squid Game keeps it incredibly simple. It isn’t hard to follow. This keeps the show exciting and a good fit for all audiences.
3. They make small details the big details
I love how the show will so often emphasize the small details. The show pays a lot of attention to color in every shot. Such a small detail but it makes the world feel less dark and depressing and more light hearted, making it more enjoyable to watch. The show also takes time to emphasize looks and gestures that charachters make to each other. These small moments give so much insight into the personality of these people as well as puch the story forward in subtle ways.
4. The ending could have been more coomplete
The only part of season 2 that I didn’t enjoy. I felt like the ending could have been much more complete. I understand there wasn’t enough time in this seasoon to ttell a full and complete story arch. However, I don’t like when I give a show a full season worth of time and it leaves me feeling like there was no true conclusion. It didn’t have a bad ending. The ending just wasn’t satisfying as it felt like the show ended in the middle of a scene. It’s almost as if you are having a conversation with a friend and they stop talking mid idea.
Overall I thought the show was great! It was such an enjoyable experience wven though I felt like the end could have been more complete. I would highly reccomend everyone checking it out!
